The movie entitled Children of a lesser God which was shown in 1986 is a film about a deaf school custodian, Sarah and a school teacher, John, who fell in love with her and did his best to help Sarah utter words. Directed by Randa Haines, the movie was adapted by Mark Medoff from his play of the same title which won a Tony Award. The play ran from 1980 to 1982 in Broadway.

I grew up in a society where handicapped people are treated as if they cannot do things on their own. Some people treat them as if they are lesser than them and often times maltreat them. Just like in the movie Children of a lesser God, Sarah was molested when she was younger thus resulting to her being wary of Johns intention to her.

I was amazed because the deaf society in the movie were doing their very best to learn how to communicate to others properly. Their disabilities did not stop them from pursuing their dreams of achieving honors. The deaf students in the movie also made the people see that they share the same right just like those who are not handicapped. Despite the fact that are hearing impaired, they are still seeking their roles in society.

Teaching deaf people how to speak may seem futile for some people. However, the movie showed us that impairments should never be a hindrance if you want to learn something. I admire the deaf peoples courage and perseverance. Unlike those other people who have the resources and health to do something for themselves but they just let opportunities pass by.

Children of a lesser God should be watched by people who are losing hope and people who do nothing to achieve their dreams. Indeed the deaf society in this film serves as a great inspiration to everyone. It proves that disabilities should never stop somebody from dreaming.
